7-Phase SEO Audit Methodology
A reproducible process on a custom stack. Timing: 48 hours from audit start to the delivered PDF.
Why methodology matters
Most “SEO audits” on the market are either a SEMrush/Ahrefs PDF export, or a set of intuitive recommendations “from experience.” In the first case, you get a templated report with no tie to your revenue; in the second — a subjective evaluation that can’t be verified or reproduced.
A reproducible process delivers a different result: every audit runs the same 7 phases — from discovery to synthesis — on the same stack of tools, with each step documented and tied to a fact.
Phase 1. Discovery
Understand business, goals, audiences, geography and price segments. Which conversions matter: leads, calls, bookings, sales. What tracking is already in place and how correct it is. Which competitors are mentioned by the client, and who actually competes for SERP.
Tools: discovery questionnaire (15 questions), manual site review, GA4/GSC/Ads access verification. Phase output: one-page business map used in all subsequent phases.
Phase 2. Content audit
Full site crawl: what exists, what’s missing, duplicates, keyword cannibalization between pages. Meta tag quality, H1-H6 structure, URL structure, internal linking, language consistency (for multilingual sites).
Tools: Screaming Frog (CLI wrapper), custom DataForSEO commands, manual review of key pages. Phase output: prioritized list of content issues by impact on indexation and CTR.
Phase 3. Tech audit
The technical “engine” of the site. Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP). Indexability — what Google sees, what’s blocked by robots/noindex, orphan pages. Schema.org markup. Hreflang for multilingual. Mobile-friendliness. JavaScript SEO — what the bot sees on render.
Tools: Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, Chrome DevTools MCP (bot rendering), GSC index coverage report, custom crawl commands. Phase output: ranked list of technical findings with concrete “before” metrics and “after” impact estimate.
Phase 4. SERP visibility
Where the site already ranks. On which queries, in which languages, in which positions. Which competitors outrank us and why. SERP feature analysis — where to capture featured snippets, knowledge panel, image pack, local pack.
Tools: GSC Performance API, DataForSEO SERP API, custom competitor map commands. Phase output: positional map across keyword clusters with opportunity/threat tags.
Phase 5. Keyword research
Real search volumes from DataForSEO (location_code=2376 — Israel). Intent classification: informational / navigational / commercial / transactional. Opportunity gap — queries where competitors rank but the site doesn’t. Local intent: what matters for Israeli geo, what for Russian-speaking audience, what for the Hebrew segment.
Tools: DataForSEO Keywords API, custom CLI commands for volume / SERP / trends / intent / domain intersection. Phase output: keyword-mapping (primary + secondary + long-tail) per page, ready to slot into meta and H1.
Phase 6. Competitor benchmark
Top-5 competitors. Their site structure. Content strategies: what they write, how often, in which languages. Tech stack (Lighthouse measurements). Backlink profile (proxy via DFS SERP queries). SERP visibility against our keyword list.
Tools: DataForSEO Competitor Maps API, Domain Intersection API, manual WebFetch review, competitor Lighthouse benchmarks. Phase output: competitor-summary with “what to copy × how to differentiate” matrix.
Phase 7. Synthesis & deliverable
All findings prioritized on two axes: revenue impact × implementation difficulty. The output is two PDFs:
- Technical report (20-25 pages) — for the dev/marketing team
- Client proposal (5-7 pages) — with roadmap and ROI estimate for decision-making
